Consumer technology gadgets, whether it’s wearables like the Bose SoundSport Earbuds or smart medical devices like the Nima Gluten Sensor, are growing by leaps and bounds. On the heels of the online marketplace boom, the surge in e-commerce stores, and third-party drop-shipping becoming the new standard, tracking the whereabouts of products has reached an entirely new level of importance. Introducing the all-new RAIN RFID Tag by Murata Manufacturing Company.

Designed for Small Consumer Goods

Murata Rain RFID Tag

Designed to track small consumer goods through the entire supply chain journey, the RAIN RFID Tag solves one of the major problems in inventory control: product traceability. The Murata RFID Tag is capable of attaching to some of the smallest consumer technology goods – making lost shipments and misplaced inventory a thing of the past. Ideal for small items that are notoriously lost in the FIFO inventory process, the Murata RAIN RFID Tag is both a chip and an antenna capable of fastening itself on some of the most challenging healthcare and wearable devices.

In production since August 2017, Murata’s RFID Tag measures only 1.25 x 1.25 x 0.55 mm and incorporates a high-powered antenna into the multi-layer ceramic substrate. Suited for use in eyewear, watches, healthcare applications, and other wearable accessories, the RFID Tag uses Impinj’s Monza R6 tag chip and complies with UHF RFID standard ISO18000-63 and EPC Global Gen2v2. The RAIN RFID also supports the global UHF band from 865MHz to 928MHz, according to Murata’s most recent press release.

“Thanks to the new LXMS-198 package, manufacturers, and retailers of small items can take advantage of all the benefits RAIN RFID has to offer,” said Carl Brasek, Senior Director of Product Management – Silicon Products at Impinj. “With Murata’s new package and Monza® R6’s superior performance, item size and materials are no longer barriers to using RAIN RFID solutions. We’re pleased to partner with Murata in to bring this innovative product to market.”

With the help of Impinj, the leading provider of RAIN RFID Solutions, Murata has built one of the most cutting-edge inventory tracking devices. From the Monza R6’s small die size to its ultra-sensitive antenna technology, manufacturers now have a powerful beacon that can be located anywhere around the world. Murata’s chip technology is a supply chain manager’s dream, a cost accountants go-to while calculating FIFO inventory, and a logistics department security blanket when tracking their freight forwarding shipment before reaching its final destination.

RAIN RFID Features

Murata Rain RFID Tag

– Ultra small size, measuring 1.25 x 1.25 x 0.55mm
– Antenna is integrated into the multi-layer ceramic substrate
– Incorporates Impinj’s high-performance Monza® R6 tag chip
– Complies with UHF RFID standard ISO18000-63 and EPC Global Gen2v2
– Supports the global UHF band from 865MHz to 928MHz

Capable of being attached or embedded into a wide range of applications, the Murata RAIN RFID Tag protects businesses and consumers against counterfeiting, lost freight, and pinpoints the location of goods during the claims process. This certainly makes tracking small consumer products a breeze if inventory is split between multiple retail locations. According to Murata’s press release, real-world uses include tagging highly-sensitive healthcare devices such as surgical tools and test vials. The RAIN technology would be especially useful in “Biochemical products needing to be strictly temperature-controlled which can make it difficult to scan visual labels due to condensation or contamination.”
