We’ve all had the misfortune of experiencing a wobbly cafe table. The ambiance can be perfect, the food incredible, but if your four-legged terrace table is resting upon an uneven surface, a morning coffee spill could ruin a peaceful breakfast. If your table is an accident waiting to happen, it’s time to fold up a napkin, stick it under the shortest leg, and take matters into your own hands. To fix wobbly table disasters, self-described “hyperbolic Paraboloid-ist” and renown Geometry genius Chris Heyring created the world’s first 4-legged coffee table that never rocks.

Inventor Chris Heyring

Introducing the NOROCK Terrace table – one of five four-legged models from Heyring’s revolutionary collection of stabilized table bases. With a passion for making things more stable, Heyring is responsible for the suspension system on the 2Play Catamaran, the kinetic suspension systems on fully-loaded Toyota and Nissan 4WD’s, and the hydraulic systems used by Nauti-craft. In other words, Heyring knows his stuff when it involves engineering for stability.

Intelligent Design Features

NOROCK, the Australian-based startup, has set out to eradicate the wobbly table from our existence. Sure, it would have been easy to just create a more durable three-legged table – since they sit flat on any surface – but as we all know, there’s stability issues, higher knock over potential, and limited surface area with three-legged tables compared to four. With that in mind, NOROCK designed five table bases catering to different cafe environments (Trail, Avenue, Terrace, Parkway, Esplanade).

The Technology

NOROCK uses “a simple mechanical system with four pivoting legs that are interconnected in such a way that they must reach an average weight loading on all four feet,” according to the company’s website. “When a table is placed on an uneven surface, the feet will move until all four feet reach a state of equilibrium or more simply, a state of stability.”

The Difference Maker

Heyring and his team at NOROCK already have their revolutionary table base in cafes across the world. From the Hampton’s Restaurant to His Majesty’s Theatre, the highly versatile NOROCK table is working like a charm. The stability magic is all in the shape of the table feet. Designed to fit loosely together when there’s no load on them and then stabilizing when you set the table down, each leg can settle nicely at the height of the floor beneath it.

Durability

Designed for both indoor/outdoor, commercial/residential use, the NOROCK table comes in both aluminum and steel bases, is constructed out of zinc-plated, powder-coated steel, and is assembled using stainless steel hardware. Backed by a two-year limited manufacturer’s warranty, NOROCK stands by the longevity of its table design. Whether you want to retrofit the base to non-NOROCK table tops or purchase one of the NOROCK in-house designs, the choice is entirely up to the purchaser.

The NOROCK Terrace Model

Providing “an unrivaled solution to table instability” is no easy task but one that was welcomed by Heyring and NOROCK. The Terrace (Part Number TCAL27SI), for example, is the perfect combination of both the Avenue and Esplanade models and is compatible with any 35.5″ table top. Available in Sandstone Black, White, Aluminum, and Metallic Silver, the Powder Coated Aluminum base is a foldable and designed for ease of storage – making the cafe setup and breakdown a seamless process.
